On 29 June 1864 Beloeil was the scene of the deadliest in the history of Canada's rail accident. Eighty- nineteen people were killed there with ninety-seven immigrants and two employees of the railway company the Grand Trunk. In the annals of the company, it is mentioned under the heading Disaster Bridge Beloeil . Before straddle the Richelieu , the track turns right at the same time down to the bridge. The regulation stipulates that railway trains must make a full stop before entering the bridge. The night of June 29, 1864 , while the swing bridge was opened to let a convoy of barges , the new driver who ignores the setpoint must stop ignores red lantern and engages the bridge. It follows an infernal din , the train rushes into the void. Cars stacked on top of each other crammed into the bed of the river. 52 German immigrants buried here and 45 buried in the Catholic cemetery who died June 29, 1864 when a train with 500 German immigrants on board fell into the waters of the Richelieu River.
Le 29 juin 1864, Belœil fut le théâtre de l'accident ferroviaire le plus meurtrier de l'histoire du Canada. Quatre-vingt-dix-neuf personnes y trouvèrent la mort dont quatre-vingt-dix-sept immigrants et deux employés de la compagnie de chemin de fer le Grand Tronc. Dans les annales de la compagnie, on en fait mention sous le titre de Désastre du pont de Belœil. Avant d'enjamber le Richelieu, la voie ferrée vire à droite en même temps qu'elle descend vers le pont. Le règlement du chemin de fer stipule que les trains doivent faire un arrêt complet avant de s'engager sur le pont. La nuit du 29 juin 1864, alors que le pont tournant était ouvert pour laisser passer un convoi de barges, le nouveau chauffeur qui ignore la consigne de l'arrêt obligatoire ne tient pas compte du fanal rouge et s'engage sur le pont. Il s'ensuit un fracas infernal : le train s'engouffre dans le vide. Les wagons empilés les uns sur les autres s'entassent dans le lit de la rivière. 52 immigrants allemands enterrés ici et 45 autres enterrés au cimetière catholique qui ont perdu la vie le 29 juin 1864 lorsqu'un train avec 500 immigrants allemands à son bord est tombé dans les eaux de la rivière Richelieu.
