Munro's Books celebrated their 50th anniversary in September 2013. Jim Munro and his wife, Alice - who won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature - opened the bookstore in 1963 in a small space on Yates Street. After relocating to a larger space on Fort Street in 1979, they moved to the current location on Government Street in 1984. The building was originally built for the Royal Bank of Canada in 1909. It had been "tastelessly modernized" in the 1950s, but the Munros restored it to its former glory in the space of 8 weeks. The building has since received two heritage awards.
Munro's Books has been described as "the most magnificent bookstore in Canada, possibly in North America", and in 2013 made a list of "16 bookstores you have to see before you die".
