Located in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Tao has become known as a diver's paradise, but is attracting more tourists with increased development of resorts and tourist amenities. Nonetheless, it retains much of its rustic charm, and island transportation can be a challenge.
The literal meaning of Koh Tao is "Turtle Island," so named because of its shape. But, Koh Tao is also a breeding ground for the hawksbill turtle and green turtle.
Accessible in the matter of an hour by high speed ferry from the mainland, Koh Tao is an easy getaway for those who are looking forward to an authentic island experience. There is a growing nightlife in the main town of Sairee, but more remote locations offer islolation in a tranquil environment.
