Im Jahr 1478 wurde am Ufer der Fulda ein erstes befestigte Schloß durch die Landgrafen von Hessen errichtet. Es wurde ein beliebter Sommersitz und zeitweise landgräflicher Witwenwohnsitz.
Das heutige Schloß Rotenburg wurde zwischen 1571 und 1607 vom Landgraf Wilhelm IV. von Hessen-Kassel und dessen Sohn Moritz von Hessen-Kassel als Vierflügelbau im Renaissancestil errichtet. Der Bau war zweigeschossig und hatte an allen vier Ecken Treppentürme.Von 1627 bis 1834 war das Schloß Residenz der Kasseler Nebenlinie Hessen-Rotenburg, die die sogenannte "Rotenburger Quart" regierte. Im Dreißigjährigen Krieg wurde das Schloß mehrfach geplündert, aber nicht zerstört. Landgraf Karl Emanuel von Hessen-Rotenburg ließ 1790 den Nordflügel nach Plänen des Architekten François Ignace Mangin im Empirestil neu errichten. Während dieses Umbaus wurde der Ostflügel vollständig abgerissen. Neben den ehemaligen Wirtschaftsgebäuden (z.B. dem Marstall, erbaut 1570) vor dem Schloß, besteht die Schloßanlage heute aus drei Flügeln. Der Innenhof öffnet sich nach Osten hin zum Schloßpark.

The present Rotenburg castle was built between 1571 and 1607 by Landgrave William IV of Hesse-Kassel and his son Maurice of Hesse-Kassel as a four-wing building in Renaissance style. It had two stories and stair towers at all four corners. From 1627 to 1834, the castle was the residence of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Rotenburg, who reigned the so-called "Rotenburger Quart". During the Thirty Years War the castle was looted several times, but not destroyed. In 1790 Landgrave Charles Emmanuel of Hesse-Rotenburg rebuild the northern wing in Empire style by plans of the architect François Ignace Mangin. During this rebuilding, the east wing was completely demolished. In addition to the former farm buildings (for example, the Royal Stables, built in 1570) in front of the castle, the Rotenburg castle today consists of three wings. The courtyard opens to the east towards the castle park.
