In Peoria, on the northern edge, is Camp Wokanda, a former Boy Scout camp that is now owned by the Peoria Park District.
The camp is off Old Galena Road. From IL Route 29, take a left onto Old Galena Road toward Mossville, then take a left onto County Road 55/Boy Scout Road and travel west on this road to the entrance on the left. There will be a large archway that you will pass under that has the park name. There are a few places to park. Consult the web site for places to go.
The park is 316 acres at the top of the bluff for the Illinois River. There are several trails that you can hike on, including the Illinois River Bluff Trail that is on the eastern edge of the park and connects to other trails outside the park. There are camping and cabin overnight facilities - see the web site or contact the Peoria Park District for more information. There are also rental facilities that can be used for weddings and other events. Also, there are educational programs.
Camp Wokanda was established as a Boy Scout camp in 1936 on land purchased/given by then the President of Caterpillar Tractor, which has a plant (Mossville) near the turnoff to County Road 55. The camp was run for many years until it was sold to the Peoria Park District in 1995, with the stipulation that the W. D. Boyce BSA Council be able to run camp for an additional 5 years to ensure a smooth transition. There is still a Scout presence in the form of Eagle Projects for kiosks, bridges and other project work.
