The house was built in 1846 for Joseph Kirkwood with a large addition added in 1853. The two-story brick house is in a Greek Revival style. The Kirkwood family were some of the earliest settlers in the eastern Ohio area. Joseph Kirkwood was the son of Robert Kirkwood, who was hero during the Revolutionary War. Robert moved with his family to the area in 1789.

The house appears to be in good condition and it serves as a private residence.
