Timely, the Scarlet Plague describes the story of a vicious plaque that struck the world in 2013. The book is divided into six sections. In section one, James Howard Smith, one of the few survivors of the plague, recalls memories of his youth and exploring the lands around the Cliff House and the nearby Sutro Baths ruins.

The latter sections of the book describes the Red Death plague and how James watched those around him die.
