Repton is the cradle of Christianity in the Midlands. Christians have worshipped on this site since 653 AD, when Elfleda, the new bride of Paeda, son of King Penda of Mercia, introduced Christianity to his father's kingdom at Repton.

"St. Wystan's Church, Repton, is a parish church located in Repton, Derbyshire, famous for its Anglo-Saxon crypt which is the burial place of two Mercian Kings. It is designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building, and is dedicated to the Anglo-Saxon Saint Wystan (or Wigstan), who was formerly buried within the church's crypt."

A fragment at the top centre of the eastern-most window in the north wall of the north aisle is thought to be mediaeval. Otherwise, the stained glass windows are mainly by Dudley Forsyth and James Powell & Sons in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
