Up until 1999 Cranzahl was a separate independent village. It was combined with Sehma to the north and Neudorf to the south to form the new municipality of Sehmatal.

The character of the two town appear to be quite similar. Small cities nestled in wooded mountain terrain with a strong tourist appeal.
