This large monument is located near the railway station of Airolo at the southern end of Gotthard Tunnel. It is dedicated to the construction workers who built the tunnel from 1872 to 1882. With a length of 15 km it was the longest tunnel of the world until 1906. 199 workers lost their lives during the construction period.

The bronze relief was created by Vincenzo Vela in 1882 on his own initiative. It was erected at the current location 1932, on occasion of the 50th anniversary of the tunnel.

NOTE FROM REVIEWER: While Occupational Monuments requires a 3D statue, this relief is of such high sculpted detail that is almost 3D, I chose to approve it in the category. Outspoken1, 24 Sept. 2013
Sector of the workforce: Tunnel Workers

Created or Donated by which group: Vincenzo Vela
