Monday, October 29, 2001, Jean-Pierre Roux-Durraffourt, living in Chambray-lès-Tours, railway driver and passionate about shooting (he trains regularly with his 22 rifle at a stand shooting sports in Chanceaux-sur-Choisille), father of three children and divorced, go by car in the streets of Tours after an altercation with his son. He parks his Peugeot 505 in the city center, puts a balaclava and took the 22 long rifle that was in his car. He is wearing a hunting jacket in brown oiled leather and a jean.
For 30 minutes, he walks through the streets of Tours and shoot indiscriminately at passers-by in a radius of 300 meters around the City Hall Tours. Jean-Pierre Roux-Durraffourt kills first victim, aged 48, and then two men, aged 59 and 66. The man also shoots on cars, shops, security forces: he made seven wounded, including three police officers and one gendarme.

He then refuge in underground car parks in the city located between the station of Tours and Vinci International Convention Centre. Trial :
Sunday 16 March 2003 is one of the largest legal reenactments in the center of Tours. Jean-Pierre Roux-Durraffourt then said to have forgotten all of his actions.
From March 16, 2005 began the trial of Jean-Pierre Roux-Durraffourt to the Assize Court of Indre-et-Loire at the Courthouse of Tours, then it is 47 years old. The accused is tried for "murders, attempted murders, attempted murders of a member of the gendarmerie and members of the National Police."

Around the killing:
- The question hovered in the morning of 29 October 2001 on the killing of Tours, radio media relaying that this might be a terrorist attack following 11th September 2001.
- The Interior Minister Daniel Vaillant cut short an official visit to Tunisia and decorated the same evening two policemen silver medal "for an act of courage and dedication."
- President Jacques Chirac sent a message to the Socialist mayor of Tours, Jean Germain: "I learned with dismay the drama that took place this morning in the center of Tours. I associate myself with the feeling of fear and emotion that must feel all Tourangeaux against this barbaric act happened in the heart of your city. In this day mourned your city, I address you, Mr. Mayor, on behalf of all our compatriots, a message of solidarity to all your fellow citizens. "
A commemorative plaque was installed at the end of the boulevard Beranger.

Le lundi 29 octobre 2001, Jean-Pierre Roux-Durraffourt, habitant de Chambray-lès-Tours, cheminot et conducteur d'engins passionné de tir (il s'entraîne régulièrement avec sa carabine 22 long rifle à un stand de tir sportif à Chanceaux-sur-Choisille), père de 3 enfants et divorcé (depuis 1999), sort en voiture dans les rues de Tours après une altercation avec son fils. Il gare sa Peugeot 505 en centre-ville, enfile une cagoule et prend la carabine 22 long-rifle qui était dans sa voiture. Il est vêtu d’une veste de chasse en cuir marron huilée et d’un jean1.
Pendant 30 minutes, il se déplace dans les rues de Tours et tire au hasard sur les passants dans un rayon de 300 mètres autour de l'hôtel de ville de Tours. Jean-Pierre Roux-Durraffourt tue une première victime de 48 ans, puis deux hommes, âgés de 59 et 66 ans. L'homme tire également sur des voitures, des magasins, des forces de l'ordre : il fait sept blessés dont trois policiers et un gendarme.
Le forcené se déplace ensuite boulevard Heurteloup et il abat d'une seule balle une quatrième personne de 33 ans. Il se réfugie ensuite dans un des parkings souterrains de la ville situé entre la gare de Tours et le Centre international de congrès Vinci. Le centre-ville est alors fermé, la police pénètre dans le parking souterrain, caché derrière une voiture, il hurle «Je veux un avion pour Kaboul !» avant que deux agents l'appréhendent après l'avoir blessé au thorax.

Procès :
Le dimanche 16 mars 2003 se tient l'une des plus grandes reconstitutions judiciaires dans le centre-ville de Tours. Jean-Pierre Roux-Durraffourt dit alors ne plus se souvenir de ses actes.
À partir du 16 mars 2005 débute le procès de Jean-Pierre Roux-Durraffourt devant la cour d'assises d'Indre-et-Loire au palais de Justice de Tours, il est alors âgé de 47 ans. Le prévenu est jugé pour «assassinats, tentatives d'assassinats, tentatives de meurtres sur un militaire de la gendarmerie et sur des fonctionnaires de la police nationale».
Trois experts psychiatres sont entendus, ils jugent tous que l'accusé psychorigide avec un trouble de la personnalité paranoïaque ne souffrait pas de maladie mentale1 mais simulait une «amnésie utilitaire».
L'accusé dit avoir de nombreux trous de mémoire, néanmoins les faits sont incontestables. Le verdict est prononcé le 29 mars 2005 en soirée. L'accusé est alors condamné à la réclusion criminelle à perpétuité, assortie d'une période de sécurité de 22 ans (peine maximale) conformément à la demande du ministère public. Il annonce son intention de faire appel avant finalement de se rétracter.

Autour de la tuerie :
- Le doute plana au matin du 29 octobre 2001 sur la tuerie de Tours, les médias radiophoniques relayant qu'il s'agissait peut être d'un attentat terroriste suite au 11 Septembre 2001.
- Le ministre de l’Intérieur Daniel Vaillant écourta un voyage officiel en Tunisie et décora le soir même les deux policiers de la médaille d’argent « pour acte de courage et de dévouement ».
- Le président de la République Jacques Chirac adressa un message au maire socialiste de Tours Jean Germain : «J’ai appris avec consternation le drame qui s’est déroulé ce matin dans le centre de Tours. Je m’associe au sentiment d’effroi et à l’émotion que doivent ressentir tous les Tourangeaux face à cet acte barbare qui s’est produit en plein cœur de votre ville. En ce jour qui endeuille votre ville, je vous adresse, M. le Maire, au nom de tous nos compatriotes, un message de solidarité à tous vos concitoyens.»
Une plaque commémorative fut installée à l'extrémité est du boulevard Béranger.
