This is a small
community garden with about 25 to 30 garden boxes for use by the gardeners. In the back is a three unit compost bin.
Rossland, being an alpine city, experiences spring a little later that surrounding communities. This can be guessed at by the fact that each garden box has plastic hoops over it, which are used in the spring and fall to enclose the box, cloche or mini-greenhouse style.
The gardeners are growing a wide range of veggies, herbs and flowers. There is a communal herb bed toward the rear of the garden. This is a great idea, as one small herb bed can provide sufficient herbs for everyone, allowing each gardener more productive space in their garden box.
Each gardener is given a box at a cost per 4'x8' bed of $15 per season, plus a $50 deposit for volunteer hours, the latter being refundable in exchange for a minimum of 5 hours of labour. The original funding of $5,000, to get the garden up and running, was provided by Columbia Basin Trust Environmental Initiatives Program.
