The Fifty-ninth Illinois Volunteers, commanded by Maj. Joshua Winters, here suffered 113 casualties of 325 engaged. The Seventy-fifth Illinois, Lieut. Col. John E. Bennett, lost 225 of 700. Serving with Col. Michael Gooding's Thirteenth Brigade, the regiments came to the aid of Maj. Gen. Alexander McD. McCook's Corps and coolly resisted vicious charges, firing with "terrible effect."
