1886: Wilhelm Steinitz becomes first recognized World Chess Champion.
1896: The first known women's basketball game between two colleges is played between Stanford and California.
1906: San Francisco earthquake (estimated magnitude 7.8) on the San Andreas Fault destroys much of San Francisco, California, USA, killing at least 3,000, with 225,000–300,000 left homeless, and $350 million in damages.
1916: President Woodrow Wilson sends 12,000 United States troops over the U.S.-Mexico border to pursue Pancho Villa; the 13th Cavalry regiment enters Mexican territory.
1926: Gene Tunney defeats Jack Dempsey and becomes heavyweight champion of the world.
1936: The Santa Fe railroad in the United States inaugurates the all-Pullman Super Chief passenger train between Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California.
