The U.S.S. Hartford was named after the City of Hartford and commanded by Admiral David Farragut. The crew of the ship were instrumental in the Union victories at the Battle of New Orleans and the Battle of Mobile Bay.

A monument honoring to the U.S.S. Hartford contains the bell from this namesake ship, suspended from a concrete support, along with a bronze plaque noting the victorious accomplishments of the ship and its crew during the Civil War. The plaque is inscribed:

BELL OF THE U.S.S. HARTFORD
ADMIRAL FARRAGUT'S FLAGSHIP
DURING THE CIVIL WAR BATTLES
OF NEW ORLEANS APRIL, 1862
AND MOBILE BAY AUGUST, 1864

"DAMN THE TORPEDOES .... FULL SPEED AHEAD"
[FARRAGUT AT MOBILE BAY]
