Church medieval in origin. Tower first to be rebuilt 1754, rest in c18 and c19. Tower holds eight bells and a clock, all installed in 1893.
In front of the church is a very old cross base with a shaft dated 1679. Churchyard is extensive and the newer area is still in use. In this area at the foot of the path are burials of the Wortley and Wharncliffe families.
The church has two lych gates, the upper one with a slab to rest coffins on, the lower is a memorial to the local srvicemen killed in WW1 and WW2.
Wortley is a small village with the church at the head of a hill ,one side towards the village and the opposite facing open country. It is mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book under the name of Wirtleie.
