Sinkholes, created when underground caverns collapse, are common in this part of Minnesota due to its underlying limestone rock formations. Some of the intact underground caverns have been opened up as show caves and tourist attractions. Many of the local residents were unhappy when the sobriquet was first applied to the town by a well-known travel commentator on a national television show. But they then decided that they could turn this lemon into lemonade and adopted the slogan to promote the town.
