Some debate as to whether these are middens or defensive mounds, but they date from pre-contact times.

These middens are located in Smelt Bay Provincial Park, on Cortes Island, BC.
According to BC Parks: "Smelt Bay was established in 1973 to protect existing native cultural sites and to provide camping and day-use opportunities. The mounds behind the beach are believed to have been built by First Nation peoples for defense purposes."
and "The beach is backed by mounds which are believed to have been built by Coast Salish First Nations as a form of defense."
However, Cortes Shellfish says "The large middens of oyster and clam shells at Smelt Bay, the Gorge and Squirrel Cove attest to the importance of these bi-valves to the early inhabitants of Cortes Island." and BC Parks Smelt Bay Master Plan refers to them as "middens".
