1890: Alice Sanger becomes the first female staffer in the White House
1900: Governor William Goebel of Kentucky shot by several assassins.
1910: The Union of South Africa is created.
1920: Thousands of onlookers watch as "The Human Fly" George Polley climbs the Woolworth Building in New York City. He reaches the 30th floor before being arrested.
1930: The 3M company markets Scotch Tape, invented by Richard Gurley Drew, in the United States.
1940: In Tibet, province of Ando, 4-year-old Tenzin Gyatso is proclaimed the tulku (rebirth) of the fourteenth Dalai Lama.
1950: In his speech to the Republican Women's Club at the McClure Hotel in Wheeling, West Virginia, Senator Joseph McCarthy accuses the United States Department of State of being filled with 205 Communists.
