1930: The 3M company markets Scotch Tape, invented by Richard Gurley Drew, in the United States.
1940: In Tibet, province of Ando, 4-year-old Tenzin Gyatso is proclaimed the tulku (rebirth) of the fourteenth Dalai Lama.
1950: In his speech to the Republican Women's Club at the McClure Hotel in Wheeling, West Virginia, Senator Joseph McCarthy accuses the United States Department of State of being filled with 205 Communists.
1960: Elvis Presley's song "Are You Lonesome Tonight" is recorded for the first time
1970: The first Earth Day is celebrated in the U.S.
1980: Andrei Sakharov, Soviet scientist and human rights activist, is arrested in Moscow.
1990: Nelson Mandela is released from Victor Verster Prison, near Cape Town, South Africa, after 27 years behind bars.
