To access the Kootenay Lake bird watching location, take Front Street to Popular Street turn right onto the road on right. Park just as you enter the parking area. There is a walkway leading to the lake, you will see the signs

This is a great park to bring the family and enjoy watching the ducks and other birds in the area.
Kootenay Lake is a perfect location for all type of birds and waterfowl. The City of Nelson and Ducks Unlimited Canada have preserved this porton of the park and its wetlands.

Migrating along the Pacific Flyway, Waterfowl congregate by the thousands to feed, rest and moult prior to the next leg of their journey.
DUCKS UNLIMITED CANADA'S MISSION is to conserve wetlands and associated habitats for the benefit of North America's waterfowl, which in turn provide healthy environments for wildlife and people. Kootenay Lake and the Columbia River valley are part of the Pacific Flyway, one of the four major migration routes which waterfowl use in North America. Wetlands nestled within these valleys provide summer breeding homes for a number of ducks and geese while spring and fall migrants use them to rest and feed. Ducks Unlimited prime focus has been the enhancement and securement of habitat to meet critical life cycle requirements of waterfowl and many other wetland dependent species.
Teeming with life, wetland habitats nourish and support an astounding number of animals and play a critical role in maintaining diverse mammalian populations in this province.
The seeds, succulent roots and stems of aquatic vegetation are vital food sources to waterfowl. These plants also provide food and protective cover for a variety of aquatic animals that are, in turn, a great source of nutrients for waterfowl.
The Kootenay wetlands support thousands of acres of essential habitat for migrating waterfowl.
The effects of human activities on essential feeding and breeding habitat have contributed to the decline of sandal crane populations. This locally threatened Species use wetlands and agricultural lands in the Kootenays during their north/south migrations.
Young waterfowl like these mallard ducklings, stay close to the hen until their downy feathers are replaced with mature flight plumage.
Fringes of shoreline vegetation camouflage nesting waterfowl from predators and provide nesting material.
Ducks Unlimited Canada would like to thank the Nelson Committee and local residents for all their support and recognition over the years.
