The Mission San Diego de Alcala was the first of the many Spanish Catholic Missions in California. It is built on and was built by the local Kumeyaay Indians.
There is a small Museum on the site and a display window without a placard that exhibits several grinding stones. Throughout the Mission there are reminders of the native peoples: a replica of an 'ewaa or typical hut, a placard about the Indians, a sculpture of Father Jaime who was the first "martyr" killed by the Indians and buried here in the Basilica.
Note there are more grinding stones (and larger) outside near the replica hut.
