This is an authentic Algonquin birchbark canoe built by master craftsman and Algonquin elder Patrick Maranda. Mr. Maranda built two of these in 1971 and the other was given to Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, an experienced outdoorsman, as a wedding gift.
Canoes were critical in the daily lives of Canada's First Nations before contact with Europeans. Later, Europeans would adopt these boats in their exploration of Canada. Much larger versions were used by Les Voyageurs to bring pelts into port for transport across the Atlantic.
The waterfall and canal lock (not shown here) are meant to represent the waterways of the Ottawa area.
