Sachsenhausen was one of the largest concentration camps in Nazi Germany. But in addition to German and Jewish victims of domestic Nazi terror, the camp served also as a POW camp.

In violation of the Geneva Convention, over 20,000 Russian and Polish prisoners of war were held here, together with freedom fighters from all over occupied Europe.

Only 36,000 of the 200,000 inmates survived. Amongst those killed were 18,000 prisoners of war, executed between 1940 and 1945.

The picture to the right is part of an exhibition along the walls of the former camp, telling the history of the camp (in this case the liberation by the Soviet Army on April 22, 1945).

At this execution trench, 18,000 prisoners of war were shot to death.
A plaque commemorates the first execution, carried out on November 9, 1940 on 33 Polish resistance fighters.

A monument in the center of the former camp honors the victims and the liberators.

The sculpture shows two prisoners and a Soviet Army liberator.

The 18 triangles on the monument stand for the 18 countries from which the prisoners of war came from.
