Alex G. Spanos Stadium, formerly known as Mustang Stadium, is an 11,075-seat multi-purpose stadium on the campus of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California (Cal Poly) and is home to the Cal Poly Mustangs.
Originally opened in 1935, the 8,500-seat stadium was expanded in 2006 to its current capacity. In addition, the stadium was renamed Alex G. Spanos Stadium after Alex Spanos, a Cal Poly alum and the owner of the San Diego Chargers, in a ceremony on November 18, 2006. The recognition and subsequent renaming was a result of a $4 million dollar donation to renovate Mustang Stadium by Mr. Spanos. This marked the largest single donation in the school's history.
Wearing the green and white school colors, the Mustangs play Division I football in the Big Sky Conference. The Mustangs have a long history of playing football. They also suffered a tragedy, when in 1960 the chartered aircraft returning the team from a game in Ohio crashed on take off killing sixteen Mustang football players, the student manager, a member of the Mustang Booster Club, and four others persons aboard the plane. The following season saw thirty-five players suited up, ten of whom were crash survivors.
