Siegfried and Tristan treat one of Major Headingley’s horses. The whole practice has been invited to the Major’s daughter, Deirdre’s coming out ball. Siegfried is keen for Tristan to go along, but Tristan isn’t impressed by Deirdre’s charms. The Major is master of foxhounds and Siegfried can see a union being of great social advantage. Tristan engages James to try and get him out of the ball, but James doesn’t come up with any ideas. Fortunately for Tristan Miss Westerman’s dog has had an operation and needs to be looked after until Miss Westerman can pick him up. Tristan thus stays behind.
Just as James, Helen and Siegfried are leaving the local police ring and ask James to attend to a dog that has been involved in a road accident. All three end up at the Police Station treating the dog and miss Deirdre’s ball.
