Taking pictures of the former Bay View Federal Savings & Loan building was a challenge due to many homeless and vagrants walking around.
WORD OF WARNING: I'd advise you to be accompanied by someone while going through this area on a weekend. Although this building is across the street from the large Westfield Shopping Center complex, there are many poor and destitute people loitering around the area. Even in broad daylight I was approached by people asking for money, wanting to sell me something, or yelling at someone else. This area has unfortunately become economically depressed and it shows with some of the graffiti, trash and destitute people lying around the streets. This is a far cry from some of the more upscale stores in the shopping center just across the street.
After a lengthy bit of research online, I finally came across an online document of an Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) done in 2006 to determine the environmental impact the 'K Corridor' of lots and parcels might cause to nearby businesses. This former bank building is listed at 800 K Street and included in the 'K Corridor' of the study. Within the ESA sdocument was a time stamp of this building's history over the decades. From 1982 to 1992 this building was the Bay View Federal Savings & Loan. This clock still functions and the name of the bank on the clock's face helped me locate this document online. The last business to operate in this building was the Men's Warehouse clothing store. Currently, this building is boarded up and remains vacant.
It's interesting to note that this building was previously a bank under two different names, the United Bank & Trust Company San Francisco in the early 1920s and then the Pacific States Savings Bank from 1929 to 1936. I've also read from another online document that this building is also referred to as the 'Pacific States Savings Bank Building' by some locals.
