William Letcher was killed by pro-British Tories during the American Revolution, Letcher grave is thought to be the oldest marked grave in Patrick County.

William Letcher was born about 1750 and lived in the Ararat Area of Patrick County, Virginia. He served as an officer in the local militia while living in the remote area of Patrick County. On the night of August 2, 1780 a British Sympathizer known only as "Nichols" murdered William Letcher is his home. Lord Cornwallis was making his march through the Western Carolinas and the presence of Bristis Forces served to encourage sympathizers to murder members of the local militia. Letcher as a perfect target living in the remote frontier. William Letcher is buried in a lone grave on property that was once owned by his family. William Letcher is the Great-Grandfather of Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart who was born less than a mile away at Laurel Hill.

The Gravesite is located on Letcher Lane about 1-mile ofF oF Route 773 (Ararat Highway)and just couple of miles from the North Carolina-Virginia State Line.

William Letcher 1750 - August 2, 1780 Who was assassinated in his own house in the busome of his family by a Tory of the Revolution on the 2nd day of August 1780. He aged about 30-years. May the tears of sympathy fall upon the tomb of the Brave.
