Det gamle vandtårn - The Old Water Tower

The water tower at Hobrovej in Randers was built in 1905. The increased population in Randers pushed the existing water supply to the limit and at the end of the 19th century there were major problems providing water to the highest parts of the city. A new water tower was the only option and architect Jens Peter Jensen Wærum designed the building.

The water tower is no longer part of the water supply in Randers and is now used by an amateur radio association.

Jensen Wærum has designed a number of prominent buildings in Randers. His impact on the city's buildings and the inspiration other architects have received from him has given water tower status of a cultural hallmark. Architecture Historic represents Jensen Wærum's water tower, a large group of water towers built in red bricks with lots of details in the brickwork, influenced by the National Romantic architectural trends around the last century. A practical and technical detail of the water tower is that the space in which the stairs is positioned between the outer wall and the cistern functions as antifreeze.

Randers Byvåben - Coat of Arms of Randers
Petri kirke. Ingen af disse kirker findes idag.

The earliest known Coat of Arms of Randers dated back to 1524. It shows a wall with a gate tower with portcullis, which leads a bridge over some water. In or behind the wall is depicted two towers. There are several interpretations of the old coat of arms, such as eg. citywall with two towers and a gate tower - that is the city's fortress or Randers castle with a moat and finally as a city wall with church towers showing behind it. Some sources believe to know that the towers are respectively. Gråbrådre, Sct. Clemens and Sct. Petri church. None of these churches exist today.
