Det nye vandtårn i Randers er slet ikke så nyt endda. Faktisk er det så gammelt at det allerede er blevet overflødig som følge af den teknologiske udvikling.
Tårnet blev opført i 1949-50 og blev taget ud af drift i efteråret 2009 hvor alderen begyndte at kræve en modernisering af tårnet. Da nyere vand pumpestationer i byen gjorde tårnet overflødig valgte man at tage tårnet ud af byens vandforsyning. Vandtårnet er tegnet af arkitekt Poul H. Mørck og blev opført af Højgaard & Schultz. På tårnets top, 94 meter over havets overflade, findes en udsigtspost.
Ejeren af tårnet udskrev i 2012 en arkitektkonkurrence omkring tårnets fremtidige udformning og anvendelse. Arkitektfirmaet Smærup og Wessman A/S vandt konkurrencen med et forslag hvor tårnet ombygges til 10 eksklusive lejligheder på 150 m2. Hver lejlighed får egen balkon på hver 125 m2. På 13. etage, tårnets top, indrettes der restaurant med 360 graders panoramaudsigt over Randers og opland.
The new water tower in Randers is not so new after all. In fact, it is so old that it has already been superseded by technological developments.
The tower was built in 1949-50 and was taken out of service in the autumn of 2009 when age began to require a modernization of the tower. As recent water pumping stations in the city made the tower obsolete it was decided to take the tower out of the city's water supply. The water tower was designed by architect Poul H. Mørck and was built by Højgaard & Schultz. On top of the tower, 94 meters above sea level, there is a lookout post.
In 2012, the owner of the Tower held an architectural competition to find out how the future design of the tower could be. Architects Smærup and Wessman A/S won the competition with a proposal where the tower will be converted into 10 exclusive apartments of 150 m2. Each apartment will have a 125 m2 balcony. At the 13th floor, the top of the tower, there should be a restaurant with 360 degree panoramic views of Randers and the area around the city.
