James Butler Hickok was born in this location May 27, 1837. He served his country as a scout and spy in the western states, to preserve the union in the civil war. He was an upholder of law and order, contributing to making the west a safe place for women and children. He was assassinated at deadwood August 2, 1876.

Near the statue is a plaque and monument erected by the State of Illinois in 1929.
