The F-84, the USAF's first post-war fighter, made its initial flight on February 28, 1946. It went into production in June 1947. When production ended in 1953, approximately 4,450 straight-wing f-84's had been built, of which 3,025 were F-84G's The F-84G was developed specifically at the request of Tactical Air Command, who needed a light fighter-bomber able to deliver tactical nuclear weapons. The F-84 was also the first aircraft designed to include an in-flight refueling recepticle, making it compatible with the newly developed Boeing flying boom in-flight refueling system. The plane gained its greatest renown during the Korean Conflict, where it was used primarily for low level interdiction missions.
