The Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour) depicts the Virgin appearing to a man named Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac. She told him to build a shrine on that hill. Not believing the apparition, the local bishop asked for a sign from the virgin. Juan Diego picked several flowers, as instructed by the Virgin, and took them to the bishop. When they fell out of his mantle they formed the image of the Blessed Mother.
[visit link] The artwork is located on a brick wall on the west side of Main St. It shows the flowers and the apparition of the Virgin (also known as Our Lady of Guadalupe) with rays of light and doves radiating from her image. She was the inspiration for the nearby town of Guadalupe and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish—the oldest in Colorado.
The mural was created by Fred "Lightning Heart" Haberlein and measures 7 ft x 28 ft. It is one of many in the area that comprise the Murals of Conejos County Driving Tour, highlighting art that engages in the "ages-old local tradition of story-telling depicting tales of settlement, folklore, faith, scenic beauty and everyday rural life."
