La station est initialement ouverte sous le nom de Saint-Mandé le 1er mars 1909 sur la ligne 6 alors limitée au parcours entre Place d'Italie et Nation. Le 1er mars 1937, elle prend le nom actuel de Picpus ; l'ancien était source de confusion avec la station Saint-Mandé - Tourelle du prolongement de la ligne 1.
The former name of the station was Saint-Mandé when the line #6 was limited between Place-d'Italie and Nation. It tooks the name Picpus on march 1st 1937 to avoid confusion with the station Saint-Mandé-Tourelle.
