Charlie Gimbert is dating the widow, Mrs Dimmock. She wants to sell her husbands African collection. Lovejoy, Tinker and Beth have a look, but don’t find much of value. Beth sketches the Chinese characters on the side of a planter and Lovejoy takes notice. Once unearthed, the planter turns out to be a ceremonial cannon of the Ming dynasty. Mr Dimmock had come across it in Madagascar.

The canon had been owned by a celebrated admiral in the Chinese navy. Charlotte suggests selling it to the financier Philip Chang. Charlotte is an old school friend of his sister, Angella. Charlotte and Lovejoy visit the Changs. At first Philip doesn’t want to buy the cannon. He arranges for Lovejoy and Charlotte to be driven back to the station. Their car is hijacked by a Tong boss, Mr Ying, who wants to buy the canon. They manage to escape and go home.

Lovejoy finds that one of Mr Ying’s men has broken into his warehouse and Charlotte has a meat cleaver delivered to her auction house. Lovejoy heeds the warning and decides to sell the cannon to Mr Ying. Unfortunately Charlie has sold the cannon to Mr Chang. Ying and Chang are bitter tong rivals. Having lost the cannon Mr Chang goes after Lovejoy. Lovejoy is saved by Charlotte, who arrives with Angela. She commands Philip back off, which he does. Angela is actually the head of the Chang tong.
