1871: The National Rifle Association is granted a charter by the state of New York.
1881: Billy the Kid escapes from his 2 jailers at the Lincoln County Jail in Mesilla, New Mexico, killing James Bell and Robert Ollinger before stealing a horse and riding out of town.
1891: The Wrigley Company is founded in Chicago.
1901: Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom dies at age 81, after more than 63 years on the throne, and her son the Prince of Wales formally succeeds her as King Edward VII.
1911: Roald Amundsen's expedition reaches the South Pole
