The land for Rhodius Park was left to the City of Indianapolis by George Rhodius in 1911. The Rhodius family was quite wealthy from extensive real estate holdings.
Rhodius Park was designed by George Kessler in 1915 and the pool opened in 1924. This is a view of the swimming pool at Rhodius Park. The building is shaped like a stadium. There are slides and diving platforms as can be seen from the picture inside the pool area.
Another photo shows the nearly 100 children lined up at the Rhodius Park pool on Indianapolis' Westside for their first swimming lesson in June 1952, as the Red Cross "Learn to Swim" program got under way. Almost 1,700 children signed up for the free swimming lessons at city parks that summer. This year, Indy Parks and Recreation opened its 16 outdoor pools May 29.
The current picture shows the pool rebuilt on the site in 1971. Since that time Public School 49 was relocated to the park adjacent to the pool and a new community center gymnasium recently opened.
The park hosts the Carnine Little League in the spring and the National Junior Tennis League in the summer and its hills are popular with neighborhood sledders in the winter.
The park provides one of the best viewing places for downtown Indianapolis fireworks on the 4th of July.
