A row of more than 140 corrugated metal boathouses line the south shore of Lake Vermilion to form the historical Stuntz Bay Boathouse District. Constructed between 1900 and 1955, the primitive buildings were offered by the Oliver Mining Company as an incentive for their workers, rewarding their employees for their commitment to the company and providing the opportunity for recreation and appreciation for the surrounding natural resources. The structures are each unique and have collectively been placed on the National Register for their connection to the local iron mines. Located on state land below the Soudan Mine, the buildings and boat launch are privately owned.
