Le carillon de l’Oratoire Saint-Joseph

Le prestigieux carillon de l’Oratoire compte 56 cloches de bronze faites d’un alliage de cuivre et d’étain. Il se classe parmi les grands carillons d’Amérique du Nord. Destiné à l’origine à la Tour Eiffel de Paris, il a été offert par de généreux donateurs à l’Oratoire en 1954.

L’instrument comprend quatre octaves et demie. Il s’étend du ré #3 au la #7 d’une façon entièrement chromatique. La plus grosse cloche pèse 1500 kg et la plus petite environ 5 kg. L’ensemble des cloches donne un poids total de 10 900 kg.

Le concert inaugural a été donnée le 15 mai 1955 à 15 h 30 par le maître carilloniste Émile Vendette (carilloniste à l'Oratoire en 1955-1956).

The carillon of the Saint-Joseph Oratory.

The impressive carillon at the Oratory consists of 56 bells cast in bronze mixed with alloys of copper and pewter. In the North American system, it is classified as a Large Carillon. Designed originally for the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it was installed at the Oratory in 1954, a gift from generous donors.

This carillon has a range of four and a half octaves extending chromatically from a low D to a high A. The largest bell weighs 1500 kg; (3300 lbs.), the smallest 5 kg (11 lbs.). All together the ensemble weighs 10,900 kg
(12 tons).

First concert at the Oratory: May 15 th 1955, 3:30 p.m., given by Émile Vendette (carillonist of the Oratory, 1955-1956).
