The birthplace of the First Congregational Church was in abandoned enlisted men's barracks at Fort Dakota, a frontier outpost. A Sunday school was started in 1870 in the old buildings and in 1872 the First Congregational Church was formed in the abandoned barracks.

Worship was at first every other Sunday with the Reverend Palmer making the journey on horseback between Sioux Falls & Canton.

In November 1873 a move was made from the Old Barracks to Allen's Hall which was located on the corner of 8th St. & Phillips Ave. For the first time comfort and proper conveniences were enjoyed by the parishioners and a Sunday school was organized for the children.

Another move to a plain brown building referred to as God's Barn, located near this final site, occurred in September 1879 that served the Church for 30 years. By 1909, after raising the needed funds and selling God's Barn, the church that started in the deserted army post found its final home in this building made of local Sioux quartzite.
