The 1902 Greenwich Foot Tunnel passes beneath the River Thames and connects Greenwich to the Isle of Dogs. At each end of the tunnel is a red bric, domed building that allows access to the tunnel by both stairs and lifts.

This description is for the access
building at the northern end of the tunnel in Island Gardens on the Isle of
Dogs. The cornerstone sits above the entrance/exit to the building and
reads:
This tunnel
constructed by the London County Council
was opened in August
1902.
There follows a list of names of those
involved.
The tunnel is a Grade II listed building
and the entry at the English Heritage website [visit
link] tells us:
"Entrance Building to Greenwich
Footway Tunnel TQ 3878 31/900 II 2. 1902. Built by LCC to house lift shaft and
entrance to pedestrian tunnel to Greenwich. Circular red brick building with
domed glass roof. Exterior panelled brickwork, double entrances with moulded
architraves and plaque above. Plain tiled interior. Mahogany panelled
lift."
