The heyday of the station was between the two world wars, after the glass conourse was completed in 1911. At that time some of the Berlin-Leipzig-Munich traffic ran via Gera and the lines to Saalfeld, Erfurt and Leipzig were double track.
Seine Blütezeit erlebte der Geraer Hauptbahnhof zwischen den beiden Weltkriegen nachdem die gläserne Bahnhofshalle 1911 fertiggestellt worden war. Damals lief ein Teil des Verkehrs Berlin-Leipzig-München durch Gera und die Strecken nach Saalfeld, Erfurt und Leipzig waren zweigleisig ausgebaut.
