The Soldiers' Monument is a 20' high light-tan granite monument consisting of a 7' high the figure of a Union soldier standing on a 13' high by 7.5' square base. The monument was sculpted by Carl H. Conrads and dedicated on August 18, 1880.

The young-looking soldier is clean-shaven and wearing a cap and long overcoat which reaches below his knees. His left foot is slightly ahead of his right foot. he is holding a rifle vertically by the barrel, right hand above his left. The butt of the rifle rests on the ground in front of his right foot.

The square pedestal enhanced with polished blue granite columns at each corner. Above the front dado there is a bas-relief carving of the seal of the State of Connecticut superimposed over a stars and stripes shield of the United States.

The front dado is inscribed, in raised polished capital letters:

THE DEFENDERS OF
OUR UNION.
1861 - 1865.
