Lovejoy is approached by the famous violinist Lindsey Parry Davies. Parry Davies wants Lovejoy to distress a genuine Stradavarius. Lovejoy manages to make contact with Tommy Norris, the expert in faking violins, but wants to know why Parry Davies wants this done.

Lovejoy gets Eric to follow Parry Davies. Eric finds that he is not the only one following him. There is another biker following Parry Davies. Eric follows the biker to an address and reports back to Lovejoy. The man at the address turns out to be Parry Davies’ father. Lovejoy decides to give him a visit. There he finds that the father originally owned the Stardavarius but the violin had supposedly been destroyed by a candle fire. Parry Davies was trying to prevent a scandal with the insurers when it would have been realised that he had swapped the violins before the fire. Lovejoy manages a reconciliation between Parry Davies and his father, fortunately before Tommy Norris has had time to effect the disguise.

In a sub plot Eric has been distressing some pub items for sale. The items are one of Eric’s sidelines. In order to effect a sale he is keen to know the date when some people are going to arrive. He tries to sweet talk the date out of Muriel, who works in the Tourist Information Office. It takes a lot of flowers before Eric has the date he needs. Meanwhile Lovejoy tipples to what Eric is up to. Every five years a group of American airmen revist the area, and the pub they used to drink at. Eric has faked the original pub sign and other memorabilia to sell to the Americans. Lovejoy gives Eric an introduction to the Americans. Lovejoy sold them some stuff five years earlier.
