When I was a youngster, growing up in the midwest, we had a large tree on our property that was bent over and nearly touching the ground, and the oldtimers who sat around in the winter, warming themselves around the ancient Ben Franklin wood stoves, telling stories and remembering their childhood, said the tree was a "council tree, one that marked the trails so the natives could meet up in the fall". As we were traveling thru the Lassen National Forest, I saw this tree and noticed the similarities to the council tree back home.

I did some research on the native peoples who first populated the Lassen area, and learned there was a group called the Yahi Yana that lived here prior to the white settlers arriving in the 1850's, and I wonder if this tree may have been a trail marker for them.
