With the North County Transit District Coaster Commuter trains, Amtrak passenger trains, plus lots of freight traffic you only have to wait a few minutes to see some kind of railroading activity at this location. And if you're new to the area, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce operates their tourist information center out of the depot. Due to its location in the center of downtown Carlsbad, food, beverages, and lot of shopping are just a few short steps away.

The Coaster runs 11 trains each way on weekdays and 4 each way on weekends. Amtrak operates 10 trains each way on weekdays and 8 each way on weekends. None of the trains stop at this depot but selected trains stop at a new platform just one block north.

While freight traffic is unscheduled, this is the only mainline freight corridor serving San Diego so there is constant freight traffic interspersed with the passenger-oriented trains.
