The monument to the independence of Sao Tome and Principe is located in the square with the same name (Praça da Independência), right on the center of São Tomé, the capital city of the country. Ironically, this square is the center of the colonial neighborhood, close to the old commercial quarters and to the Ana Chaves bay.

It was here that the independence was announced on the 12th July 1975. Unlike other African countries which used to be part of the Portuguese Empire, in Sao Tome and Principe the independence was achieved in a peaceful way. The first president of the new country was the leader of Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe, Mr. Manuel Pinto da Costa.
