On April 27, 2011 Hackleburg suffered catastrophic damage when it was hit by an EF5 tornado – part of the April 25–28, 2011 tornado outbreak – which killed 18 Hackleburg residents. On May 2, the Red Cross declared the city 75 percent destroyed.
