This artwork appears to have been assembled from the actual cast-iron sideframes of an antique desk (the type that I actually used during my first years in school). The back of one desk formed the work surface for the student sitting behind the desk.

Each desk was built by placing two sideframes, like those pictured, side-by-side about 30 inches apart. The frames were joined by three planks: one to form the seat on which the student sat, one to form the desktop for the next student sitting behind the first, and a third to form a storage shelf under the desktop.
