In 1821, King George IV visited Ireland and stopped at the newly built harbour in Dunleary. In memory of this visit, the town was renamed to Kingstown (this name remained in use until 1921), and a granite obelisk supported by four balls with a crown at the top was erected at the harbour. At the base and sides there are names of harbour commisioners and engineers.
The obelisk was a target of IRA bomb attack in 1970 and one of the balls was damaged. It has been repaired recently by Dun Laoghaire town.
