The Cistercian Abbey at Hailes was founded by the Earl of Cornwall, in 1246 as thanks for being saved from a shipwreck. The abbey became a major pilgrimage site as a result of owning a holic relic: a vial of Christ's blood.
With the disolution of the monasteries, the "holy relic" was deemed to be nothing more than animal blood and was destroyed.
Following the disolution, the site became a private dwelling for a time, before falling into ruin. Now, all that is left are the peaceful atmospheric ruins of this once great abbey.
A free audio guide is provided on site which will navigate you around the site and provide some of the background of the monastery.
The abbey is owned by the National Trust and managed by English Heritage.
